I went into my Bees yesterday. So glad that I did as today is rainy.
I found every hive with a good amount of honey already stored and the flow is nowhere near over. In fact, this rain should kick it into high gear.
About a month ago, things were looking pretty dire, so I fed a couple of hives that looked very light. There was also little brood in those hives. I knew that the eggs being laid at this time are the winter bees. No winter bees……no hive.
The story has a happy ending, as all the hives have build up the population and have a lot of brood and food. A few hives have 2 shallow supers full of honey!! I will not take any of it. If there is some left in the Spring, I will claim it at that time.
I am blessed, not only with a lot of forage that I have planted, but also a farmer on the other side of the lake. He grows veggies for a farmer’s market. He sees my Honey Bees there all the time foraging on the flowers on his crops. Recently he had planted a cover crop called “Crotalaria” – he called it Sun Hemp. I believe that my bees were able to recover from very hot, very dry conditions because of this crop. Thanks Farmer Joe!!!!
The bees have not kicked out the drones yet either, so that tells me that they are feeling like they have ample stores to feed them. This drone expelling event happens as the weather cools. Some say that the drones are “booted” if the temps are consistently below 50 during the day. Only the bees know that for sure!!
I’ve also recently seen big hatch outs in all of the hives. I Love seeing the hatch outs!!!!
I PRAY THAT WE ARE AT A TURNING POINT FOR OUR POLLINATORS!!! THAT THEY CAN BECOME STRONG AND NOT HAVING TO DEAL WITH POISONS LIKE THEY HAVE FOR MANY, MANY YEARS!!
IF YOU ARE NOT AWARE OF THE POISONING OF INSECTS, ANIMALS AND HUMANS……I’M NOT SURE WHERE YOU HAVE BEEN?? UNDER A ROCK SOMEWHERE!!!!
I am satisfied that I have done all that I can and at this time, my Honey Bees look really good going into winter.
Thanking God for that!!!!!

Flowers blooming in October are – Wing Stem, Golden Rod & Aster. There are many different species of Golden Rod and Aster.
