AND JUST LIKE THAT – WINTER IS UPON US!

I checked my Bees at the first of the Fall Nectar Flow. The flow started at the end of September and is now just finishing up in late October, with some late blooms of Sea Myrtle – Baccharis halimifolia still hanging on. The flow is finished and I must determine the amount of food that each hive has going into winter.

From being a bit short on food in July and August, to my inspection in early September, they had found a source of nectar and their frames were now all looking very good in the food category. The fall flow was the icing on the cake, giving them ample food stores for winter.

Because the Bees looks really good in October, I decided to take a Beach Trip. Me and my dog had a great time walking the beach and chasing balls.

I am always on the look out for new plants and did see a couple at the beach that would be a great addition to my already full pallet of plants on my property. Here is a couple that I found.

Indian Hawthorn
Thorny Olive

Both of these plants have small blooms that the Honey Bees would Love!

After inspecting the honey stores, I will be getting the hives ready for winter. This means installing boards under the screened inner cover to reduce wind, making sure they have the smallest entrance on the entrance reducer and finally, the last task – wrapping the hives with a black insulated bee wrap.

2025 was a FAST and FURIOUS YEAR!!!! They all seem to go by so quickly now.

My last picture will be my PRIZE plant for my Bees. Swamp Sunflower. This is the plant this year. I did not get them trimmed before July, so they got a bit tall and by end of bloom, some of them had fallen over. They made a Glorious Show!!

Swamp Sunflower in all it’s Glory

Until Next Month
